Ideas for consideration

Over sixty years ago, the Hungarian community made a positive start by creating spaces for social connection, such as a community kitchen, a sports club, a seniors' group, and ethnic dance lessons. While these efforts were valuable in building a sense of belonging, progress seemed to stall, as we did not move forward to form a chamber of commerce or an entrepreneurial network—initiatives that other ethnic communities have been successfully fostering for decades. This gap has left many of us vulnerable to exploitation, often under the guise of "talent identification," where skilled migrants are hired to do the work of multiple employees for a single wage, while others with less workload appear busy or benefit from the unfair distribution of labor.

Additionally, some migrants experience unfair treatment in the workforce, facing what can feel like a modern form of colonial privilege—working tirelessly while others enjoy a lifestyle supported by their efforts, with minimal impact on the earnings of the wealthiest elite. Another tactic involves placing migrants in key roles without empowering them to question or challenge business leaders, leading to their unwitting involvement in unethical practices, such as environmental harm, public health violations, or damage to heritage sites—without accountability.

This highlights the need for migrants to unite, cooperate, and advocate for fair treatment. This effort isn’t about nationalism or exclusion; rather, it’s about fostering integration, enhancing productivity, and ensuring that we’re not taken advantage of due to a lack of knowledge about our rights or the absence of strong, educated leaders who can effectively engage with authorities and support our communities.

Ange and The Boss tells the improbable story of all-time great Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskás finding himself in Melbourne in the late 80s, coaching the Greek NSL team South Melbourne Hellas.

Barely able to speak English and comedically overweight, he united and inspired the team to a dramatic championship win in 1991. Eating, drinking, and enjoying himself along the way.

It’s a sports documentary, but it’s also a film about life in Australia. It’s about immigrant identity and belonging, gluttonous pasta consumption, and the broken window winder in Ange Postecoglou’s Datsun 200B.
