About This Project
Connecting Our Past, Present and Future
The story of Hungarians in Western Australia is much larger than any one organisation, generation or period of migration.
Over many decades, Hungarians have come to Western Australia for different reasons and at different times. They have established families, businesses and professions; contributed to sport, culture and community life; created organisations and friendships; and become part of the wider Western Australian story.
As generations change, community connections also change.
People pass away, families move, younger generations establish their own lives, later migrants form new networks, organisations change, and knowledge once shared through personal relationships can gradually disappear. Photographs lose their context, names become unfamiliar, and stories that were once commonly known can be lost.
At the same time, people across Western Australia may have Hungarian parents, grandparents or earlier ancestry but little or no connection with an organised Hungarian community. Others may have arrived more recently and simply have not yet found those connections.
Why a digital community portal?
The internet gives us an opportunity to connect some of these pieces again.
The Magyars of WA is an independent community portal designed to make information easier to find, preserve community knowledge and history, connect people and organisations, and provide accessible pathways for participation.
You should not need to already know the right people simply to discover what exists.
The portal brings together community information, organisations, events, history, photographs, professional and academic connections, cultural resources and opportunities to contribute.
It does not seek to define who belongs or to speak on behalf of every Hungarian in Western Australia.
Instead, it provides another way to discover, connect and participate.
Preserving history with purpose
Preserving community history is not simply about looking backwards.
Understanding the people, organisations, activities and experiences that came before us can help reconnect generations and prevent valuable community knowledge from disappearing.
The history presented here is intended to remain open to further evidence, memories, photographs, corrections and different perspectives. Where information is incomplete, we aim to make that clear rather than fill gaps with assumptions.
Our purpose is not to establish a single official version of the community's history, but to help make its many parts discoverable.
Another opportunity to belong
For some people, the portal may simply provide useful information.
For others, it may help them discover a family connection, recognise a name or photograph, learn something about their heritage, find an organisation or activity, contribute a memory, or reconnect with a part of their background that had become distant.
There is no requirement to belong to an organisation, speak Hungarian or identify in any particular way.
The portal opens a door. Each person decides what that connection means to them.
From community memory to community development
The long-term purpose is simple:
Preserve what may otherwise be lost.
Make community knowledge easier to discover.
Reconnect people, generations and information.
Create opportunities to participate and contribute.
Leave the door open for people discovering or rediscovering their roots.
Use the knowledge of the past to help strengthen the community of the future.
The Magyars of WA is therefore not simply an archive or directory.
It is a growing connection point between the Hungarian community that came before us, the diverse community that exists today, and those who may discover that connection tomorrow.
